Did You Know? What Does This Mean for Me?

Did You Know? is a project that originally started out as a PowerPoint presentation for a faculty meeting in August 2006 at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado. Since then the presentation has been updated and seen around the world millions of times. The video below was posted in the Fall of 2008 with updated information. As an educator my mind is filled with questions as I watch the video. How will we prepare our students to meet the challenges of this century? After viewing the presentation, take a look at some questions posted on the Shift Happens wiki

  1. I've seen this video clip before. It still amazes me. It proves how quickly things change and will continue to change. The one bit of information that stated that the technology majors, by the end of their 3rd year in college, what they learned the first year will be outdated. It just goes to show that there is never an end to our learning. If you keep reading and move on to a few more posts, you will find one by someone named Stephanie called "Shift Happens--What Next?" She had some good things to say and we at FRPS are doing many of those things as we are trying to step-it-up with the blogging and wiki. She refers to us all as being learners (yep that's me!) and that we need to change adult behavior and practices first. Being "technophobic" or "technology illiterate" is no longer an option if we are going to lead our students into the future. Thanks, Steve & Jan, for helping us!!

I guess I must if I truly want to lead my students forward!I also viewed some of the other clips and blogs and hope that I will be one of those teachers that willing wants to move ahead in technology, so that I can prepare my students to the best of my ability.I keep striving forward with the help of you--Steve and Jan!!! Thanks again for that nudge!!!!!!Debbie

  3. I have also seen this clip before but am amazed at the information presented. It’s stunning to see how quickly this world is expanding. I agree that we can no longer afford to “allow” teachers or students the options of deciding whether or not to use technology. It must be a requirement in the 21st century. At first this is a daunting thought. However, I do not advocate that we must all be instantly proficient! That would be unreasonable. We, as educators, need to be willing to risk being learners along side our students. We need to be able to collaborate to solve problems together. We need to be able to communicate as we grow together in this new dimension.

I think that we are sometimes a bit short-sighted or possibly egocentric in the belief that if we choose not to jump aboard this movement that the world will wait for us. That’s just not true anymore and we had better work to prepare our children or they won’t be prepared for their futures. I recently read that people in many countries were asked what they would do if they had an extra hour in each day. Most western countries elected to spend time with family. Only India responded that MOST of that population would choose to spend their extra hour at work! So we’re competing against people that are technologically literate as well as willing to do the jobs that are waiting for them… We had better be prepared for the competition.

  4. I believe we are making much progress at the Primary school. The biggest step is seeing the need to change - we're there! I think one of the most difficult changes to make is becoming learners "with" our students. It's hard on the ego to think that a child may have more knowledge in some areas than us. Although children may be able to grasp digital media quicker, we can use our pedagogical skills to guide our students and help them develop the higher thinking skills as they learn how to learn.

  5. Like all of you, I have seen this video several times. It amazes me how quickly our world is changing. I try my best to stay current but. . . WOW am I ever going to catch up?
We need to learn as much as we can and, once we feel comfortable, we should share that knowledge with colleagues as well as students. This is our world and we should be willing and ready to change with it. Keep up is a challenge and I am up for it!
